Evaluation of Perceived Facial Dimensions of Maxillary Permanent Anterior Teeth in a Group of Yemeni Adults and their Agreement with the Golden Proportions

Abstract

Finding the perfect balance for a genuine smile when restoring front teeth can be quite difficult. It is crucial to choose just the right size for the upper front teeth in order to achieve a visually pleasing result. This study aimed to examine the agreement of golden proportion (GP) with perceived dimensions of the upper permanent anterior teeth in a group of Yemeni adults. It is a cross-sectional study that included 101 (49 male and 52 female) adult patients. The data collection took a period from January to June 2020. The patients were selected for the satisfaction of selection criteria. Irreversible hydrocolloids impressions were taken then the stone casts of the upper arches were made. The perceived width of upper incisors and canines observed from the anterior was measured using an electronic digital caliper. The study results revealed a low occurrence of the GP. The GP of the LI/CI existed only in 9 (18.41%) males and 8 (15.4%) females. Similarly, GP of the CA/LI existed only in 2 (4.1%) males and 10 (19.2%) females. There were highly significant differences between the mean perceived width ratios of maxillary anterior teeth and the GP between males and females. The mean perceived width ratio of the LI/CI was 0.65 and that of the CA/LI was 0.66 at both sides of the whole sample. The study concluded that the existence of the GP was found to be a symmetrical ratio between both sides and between both genders, which appear to be important factors that should be considered during the upper anterior teeth restoration for Yemeni subjects. The GP was did not exist between the perceived widths of the upper front teeth for both genders in the studied group of Yemeni adults.
