Subtitling: Concepts, Challenges & Assisted Application

Abstract

This study aims to identify the concept of subtitling and the challenges that a subtitler encounters. In addition, it aims to specify the effective programs/applications that the subtitler can use. The qualitative method was followed to provide a brief overview of the concepts, identify the challenges and specify the useful applications. It consists of four chapters. At first, Chapter 1 is an introduction that provides a background to the study, states the aims of the study, its methodology and limitations. Secondly, Chapter 2 gives a comprehensive review about subtitling, its types, importance, previous studies and some other related concepts such as subtitles, subtitler … etc. Thirdly, Chapter 3 discusses the challenges the subtitler may face either linguistic or technical ones. Fourthly, Chapter 4 states some computer and mobile subtitling programs that help the translators to subtitle movies. Finally, Chapter 5 concludes the study with a summary of all the previous chapters, recommendations and suggestions for further studies
