| dc.description.abstract | Selection of patients for orthodontic treatment depends on both objective and subjective indications. While objective orthodontic treatment need is based on specialists' clinical findings, subjective orthodontic treatment need involves several factors, including patients' self-perception of their need for orthodontic treatment. Dental aesthetics is a key factor that motivates patients, particularly children, adolescents, and young adults, to seek orthodontic care. Although malocclusion can influence perceptions of dental aesthetics, children's own perceptions of dental appearance and orthodontic treatment need are important for enhancing cooperation and motivation during treatment. Information about patients' self-perceived need for orthodontic treatment is therefore an important component of professional orthodontic treatment planning. Criteria for defining dental attractiveness may vary across communities and can influence thresholds for orthodontic treatment. Most children perceive dental appearance as an important aspect of facial aesthetics, and aesthetics has been shown to contribute to psychosocial well-being and self-esteem among children and adolescents. Previous studies have examined factors affecting self-perceived orthodontic treatment need, with varying results. Studying self-perceived orthodontic treatment need across different age groups helps determine the age at which children can evaluate aesthetic malocclusion and recognize their need for orthodontic treatment. | en_US |
