Corpus-Linguistics Awareness among BA Translation

Abstract

This research aims to investigate students' awareness about using corpus linguistics. It is also to identify the problems that face students using corpus linguistics. In addition to that it attempts to guide students to the importance of using corpus linguistics. After a brief overview of the main problems that face students using corpus linguistics, the research presents a descriptive study which analyses 3rd and 4th Level students' awareness using a questionnaire that explores their awareness of Corpus-Linguistics; uses or functions of Corpus-Linguistics and focus of Corpus-Linguistics in their translation courses. It details and clarifies the problems that the students recognize and decide on their degree of severity. It is found that the majority of the students are aware of Corpus-Linguistics, and they know about some famous Corpus-Linguistics i.e. Michigan Corpus of Academic Spoken English; American National Corpus; and BNC respectively. In contrast, although Ss make use of Corpus Linguistics while translating; and agree that using corpus help taking a decision, they couldn't differentiate between Corpus-Linguistics and Discourse Analysis; and don't know whether Corpus-Linguistics can provide negative evidence or not. So, there is a gap between Ss` thoughts and use reality of corpus. In addition to that, they think that no enough focus is given to Corpus-Linguistics in the Translation Program courses.
