Evaluation of Adding Coenzyme Q-10 Supplement and Other Predictors to Standard Clarithromycin-Based Triple Therapy on the Eradication Rate of Helicobacter Pylori Infection: A Field Study in a Single Center in Sana’a City

| dc.description.abstract | An estimated 50% or more of people worldwide are infected with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), which is a significant cause of gastritis, peptic ulcers, gastric adenocarcinoma, and primary gastric lymphoma. This study aimed to evaluate of adding Coenzyme Q-10 supplement as an adjuvant treatment and other predictors to standard Clarithromycin-based triple therapy on the eradication rate of Helicobacter Pylori infection. A double-blind, controlled clinical trial was conducted in the internal medicine consultation clinics in the Modern European Hospital in Sana'a city, from March 2024 to August 2024. The total sample size was 104 patients, with an additional 20%; there were 124 patients with newly diagnosed H. pylori infection and acute dyspeptic symptoms for at least one month. All the patients were randomly divided into two groups: Group A (Control group), patients (n=62) received standard triple therapy (STT), consisting of clarithromycin tablets (500 mg), amoxicillin tablets (1000mg), and esomeprazole tablets (20mg). Group B (Intervention group), patients (n=62) received Coenzyme Q10 supplement capsules (200mg), plus standard triple therapy. About one hundred eleven patients completed the study, 55 in group A and 56 in group B. The results of this study showed that the H. pylori eradication rates were 65.5% in group A (control group) and 85.7% in group B (intervention group); the eradication rate of H. pylori infection was significantly higher in group B (P = 0.013). This study concluded that adding of 200 mg of the Coenzyme Q10 capsules to standard triple therapy improved the H. pylori eradication rate with a 20.2% difference (P= 0.013), which may indicate a promising therapeutic effect of CoQ10 as an adjuvant therapy. | |
